Gary Lucas simultaneously contextualizes and updates director Wu Yonggang's 1934 silent jewel by blending contemporary Shanghai film music with emotionally resonant solo blues guitar. With Lucas's marvelously improvised performance, "The Goddess" gets the score she so richly deserves.
