Gary Profiled in 'The Forward'—Jewish Weekly Also Publishes Lucas Poem in Special Sept. 11th Tribute
The Forward, the oldest national Jewish newspaper of record, recently ran
a cover story by Alexander Rose on Gary's music career in their November
23 2001 issue (you can read it online in The Forward archives at
www.forward.com—click on the Back Issues section on the upper left hand
side). The venerable newspaper, beloved of Jews the world over and a
leader in cultural coverage of Jewish import, devoted a lengthy piece
profiling Gary's success on the international music scene.
And earlier that month, in the issue of November 9th, Gary had a poem
selected at the request of Forward cultural editor Daniel Asa Rose and
published in a special section devoted to Jews in the arts and their
response to the tragedy of September 11th. In the company of such
distinguished Jewish artists such as David Mamet and Israel Horovitz,
Gary's poem stood out for its pithiness and wit:
THE DEATH OF IRONY
September 11th
we are told
signalled
the death of
irony
A Jew
without
irony
is
nothing
but a
religious
fundamentalist
—Gary Lucas
Gary was thrilled to be published in the Forward, former place of
employment of his favorite alltime author Isaac Bashevis Singer.
