Gary Jams in Krakow Before 10,000 Festival Fans
On Saturday night July 12th Gary joined his friends Hasidic New
Wave (whose first Knitting Factory album featured a guest appearance by
Gary), the incendiary jazz-rock group led by trumpeter Frank London and
sax player Greg Wall (and herein augmented by an African drum ensemble)
as their special guest onstage before 10,000 cheering fans at the annual
Jewish Heritage Festival in the square of the old Jewish Quarter of
Krakow Poland.
At midnight, Gary stepped onstage with a rousing
introduction from Greg Wall, plugged in his 1946 Gibson J-45, and
proceeded to wail, trading acoustic slide licks to the delight of the
massive crowd with HNW's stellar guitarist David Fiucynski at the end of
Hasidic New Wave's set, which was broadcast live over national Polish
television.
Also on the bill were the outstanding neo-klezmer groups
Satlah from Israel (featuring Danny Zamir) and Brave Old World from the
U.S. The Heritage Festival was jammed with revelers from all over the
world, including many non-Jewish Polish fans, and had the atmosphere of
a typical summer rock festival under the starry skies of Krakow.
