HBO To Premiere Oscar Nominated "LaLee's Kin" September 18th at 7:30 PM EST, Maysles Films Documentary with Original Gary Lucas Score
"Lalee's Kin", the saga of a poor black share-cropping family in contemporary Mississippi, with original music by Gary Lucas, received an Academy Awards Nomination for Best Documentary on February 12th. The film was commissioned by HBO and will begin airing on that channel in September (rescheduled from May 12th), after a successful premiere at last year's Sundance Festival, where Variety hailed Gary's music: "Gary Lucas' Delta blues guitar music adds vivid color to this report from America's forgotten underbelly." Directed by Susan Froemke and Deborah Dickson with Albert Maysles (Gimme Shelter), the film features a richly evocative electric and acoustic blues-drenched score by Gary, plus rural blues tracks by Shakey Horton and Junior Kimbrough.
