Gary to Produce French Avant-Rock Band Tanger
Gary is set to produce the acclaimed French avant-rock group Tanger
("Tangier") for
Universal Music's Mercury France label. The group, longtime fans of
Gary's work and his collaborations with Jeff Buckley, contacted him out
of the blue over the internet last spring and expressed strong interest
in working with him and having him produce their third album. Gary was
very impressed after hearing their music, a distinctive and poetic
melange of alternative rock, free jazz, and middle Eastern influences,
and the group flew him in late May to Tangier Morocco, where they were
working on new music for their upcoming album.
Gary and Tanger's leader
Phillipe Pigeard bonded strongly, and agreed to continue working in
Paris later that summer. After playing the Meltdown Festival in London in
early July, Gary joined Tanger in Paris for intense pre-production
sessions that resulted in new Lucas/Tanger collaborations. The new album
recording sessions began in September in Avignon France, and will
continue in London in October at Olympic Studios, where legendary string
orchestrator David Whittaker will conduct a large orchestra for overdubs
on 6 songs. Joining the group and Gary will be special guest Billy Ficca
of Television on drums. Stay tuned for further developments.
