"Beyond the Pale" CD
Gary Lucas Vs The Dark Poets

His work with Jeff Buckley and Captain Beefheart probably makes Gary Lucas the world's most popular avant-rock guitarist. Here, his solo pieces mingle with tracks recorded with electronic composer James Hunter, aka The Dark Poets, whose samplescapes, synth beds and vocal samples about things like military mind-control techniques recall the dark portents of Cabaret Voltaire. Highlights include a resonant cover of part of Popol Vuh's "Aguirre, The Wrath of God" soundtrack; an exhilarating "Judgement at Midnight" incorporating swirling National steel guitar phrases over a synth drone bed pockmarked with found-sound fragments; "Breath of Bones", a delicate tangle of guitar tendrils; and "Ted's Theme", a lovely sequenced samba-shuffle burnished with glinting guitar. Solo showcases include the glistening Frippertronic-style guitar tones of "Rosemary's Baby", and the almost electric-flamenco flurries of "Rise Up To Be".

"Pork Chop Blue Around the Rind" CD
Fast 'N' Bulbous

Walloping instrumental versions of Captain Beefheart faves as played by a crack, deranged 7 piece little/big band comprised of bellerin' plain horny horns and maniac bass and drums (some of NYC's finest improvisers) — plus of course, the X-Factor — former Beefheart/Magic Band alumnus Lucas improvising his ass off on new electric slide and blistering lead — together the guys take these Don Van Vliet compositions into the hip-osphere, the flip-osphere, the gone-osphere, and the way, way gone-osphere — the whole shebang ('cept for the guitar parts, 2-in- 1 without no oil, courtesy Gary) arranged and conducted by noted avant-saxophonist/composer Phillip Johnston (Microscopic Septet)...mucho rave reviews in DownBeat, Rolling Stone, NPR, and the Village Voice!

"Diplopia" CD
Gary Lucas & Jozef Van Wissem

The first album from Dutch lutist Van Wissem combines the courtly filigree of Jozef's medieval lute with Gary's bottleneck country blues steel guitar to produce one of the freshest and most original instrumental albums ever...the combination of graceful Renaissance music and the earthy starkness of Gary's slashing blues attack and delicate plucked filigree is inspired — the title says it all ("Double Vision")...a manifesto for a new landscape of sound...Vermeer meets Son House on the Far Side of Paradise...

"The Edge of Heaven" CD

A sumptuous, romantic, and seductive world music classic, featuring Gary's lush and soulful arrangements of pop hits from 1930's Shanghai as originally recorded by Chow Hsuan and Bai Kwong, 2 famous Chinese divas — melodic Chinese pop songs that combine swing, Broadway and Tin Pan Alley elements with Chinese influences, further filtered through Gary's roots Americana sensibility — with guest vocalists Celest Chong and Gisburg — #1 on the World Charts in Canada, this album made many Best of the Year lists in 2001 and received accolades all over the world (including China) — with rave reviews in Rolling Stone and on PBS and NPR...by far Gary's most popular album to date! A lavishly designed package and booklet, with one of the most beautiful (hidden) covers you've ever seen (check the lower image to the left) that complements the gorgeous music inside.

"@Paradiso" CD

Just like the title says, recorded live at Gary's favorite venue in Holland (if not the world) — Amsterdam's famed Paradiso. This old Dutch church has been going strong since the 60's as a temple of sonic wonderment and has been host to rock royalty like The Rolling Stones and The Velvet Underground for decades... Gary first played there with Captain Beefheart in 1980 and to date has played there subsequently 20 separate times!...which has to be some kind of record...both solo, as on this EP, and also with Gods and Monsters, Jozef Van Wissem, etc. You can tell Gary loves playing for his beloved Dutch audience (Holland was the first European country that took to Gary's music in a big way) — as you can hear from the recorded evidence herein, they love him back just as much! Includes Gary's amazing solo rendition of Kraftwerk's "Autobahn", a live "Rise Up to Be", and more...

"Evangeline" CD

An all acoustic tour de force from the master fingerpicker, who knows how to turn his 1946 Gibson J-45 into a 6-string orchestra — typically eclectic repertoire that ranges from Gary's own offbeat folky originals to covers of 30's Chinese pop and Gary's arrangements of Wagner ("Overture to Tannhasuer"), Sun Ra ("Interstellar Low-Ways"), and Lalo Schifrin ("Cool Hand Luke") — this album was hailed upon release in Billboard Magazine as Gary's breakthrough to a wider audience beyond the cult of experimental music lovers, and it showcases his rootsy blues and down-home bluegrass feel to a tee on tracks like "The Animal Flesh Comes Creeping Back" and "Judgement at Midnight" — melodic, incendiary and above all — highly user-friendly!

Gary's acclaimed second Gods and Monsters album — a bracing dip into the rushing streams of psychedelic rock, Appalachian folk, and off-the-wall unclassifiable art-pop on tunes like "After Strange Gods", "Jericho", and "Exit, Pursued by a Bear" — includes a killer acoustic solo cover of Percy Grainger's lovely "Children's March", a live tear through Arthur Russell's classic dance club anthem "Let's Go Swimming", and then there's "Cantina", a furious no-holds barred free-jazz assault on the senses — featuring longtime Gods and Monsters stalwart Jonathan Kane on drums, Ernie Brooks (Modern Lovers) and Jean Chaine on bass, Sonya Cohen and Dina Emerson on vocals, and the immortal anti-glee club stylings of vocalists Kenny and Larry.

A much sought after collector's item, released only in the Czech Republic in the mid-90's — but we have a few copies left! Gary Lucas - Sounds of the Surreal/Monsters from the ID DVD-R

Sounds of the Surreal:
"Guitarist of 1000 Ideas" Gary Lucas accompanies 3 masterpieces of the early fantastic silent cinema with his original solo guitar scores, in a program commissioned by the film Society of Lincoln Center which he debuted at the Walter Reade Theater on Dec. 28th 2000. Since then he's gone on to sell out venues around the world with this heady brew of ghostly music and haunting images from a forgotten world...
Monsters from the ID:
"Monsters from the Id" finds Gary Lucas playing totally improvised solo guitar soundtracks to accompany and enhance clips from some of Gary's favorite horror and sci-fi sound films — color and black and white fever dreams and obsessions, including Polanski's "Rosemary's Baby", Mario Bava's "Black Sunday", "Mothra", "The Golden Voyage of Sinbad", "Village of the Giants", "Carnival of Souls", "The Brain that Wouldn't Die", the original "King Kong", and more...

The Films:
Entr'acte
Rene Clair, France, 1924
"Entr'acte" is, on one level, just what its title says: a short work intended to be shown between live performances. The original occasion was an evening of dadaism run amok, and "Entr'acte" held its own. The central event of the narrative is a funeral, but most of the participants, including the corpse, are dancers. The hearse is drawn by a camel. What a way to go!
Ballet Mecanique
Fernand Leger, France, 1924
The famous experimental short in which everyday images form abstract patterns. The only film by the legendary Cubist painter, it is a key to all subsequent surrealist experiments in cinema.
The Cameraman's Revenge
Ladislaw Starewicz, Russia, 1912
An outlandishly humorous morality play involving 4 insects, two clandestine trysts, and one hell-bent-for-revenge photographer. Starewicz was one of the earliest and most unique pioneers of stop-motion animation. Bizarre and beautiful!

The source prints are superb, and the live soundtrack was recorded in excellent full stereo sound. Includes a spoken commentary by Gary Lucas about the films and project — and includes a surprise extra (or two)!

Gary Lucas' original solo guitar scores recorded live at the Porgy and Bess Club, Vienna, 9/16/07

Gary Lucas - "The Golem" DVD-R

This DVD includes the complete 1920 film accompanied by Gary Lucas' original solo guitar score on the soundtrack—now upgraded visually using the best source print currently available ("restored" and colour tinted).

Since debuting this score live in 1989 with co-composer/keyboardist Walter Horn at the BAM Next Wave Festival, Gary has gone on to accompany the film with a solo guitar version in over 15 countries around the world, including performances at London's Royal Festival Hall, New York's Lincoln Center, the Venice Biennale — and in Prague, home of The Golem.
Based on the story of the actual historical Rabbi Jehudah Loew, the 16th century rabbi who legend has it fashioned a man out of clay to save the Jewish community of Prague from annihilation, "The Golem" (1920, d. Paul Wegener and Carl Boese) is a superb example of the early horror cinema at its finest, and went on to profoundly influence such films as James Whale's "Frankenstein" (1931).
