Two new photos of Gary Lucas unearthed with Leonard Bernstein and the Yale Symphony Orchestra during his first trip to Europe with the YSO to perform the lead electric guitar part in the European premiere of Leonard Bernstein's "Mass" at the Wiener Konzerthaus in June 1973.

Gary sporting a custom Captain Beefheart button chats with his idol Leonard Bernstein at the US Ambassador's garden party reception after the premiere of Leonard Bernstein's "Mass" at the Wiener Konzerthaus. Lenny and Gary discussed many things together that night. A full account by Gary can be accessed at Rock's Back Pages website here.

Gary received the best compliment of his career to date that night when Lenny told him "Man, you were really wailing!!" re: one of Gary's bluesy solo free electric guitar improvisations on the "Mass" number "I Don't Know".

Here's a shot of the "electric engine room" during a rehearsal at the Konzerthaus in Vienna in the run-up to the big premiere of Leonard Bernstein's "Mass". Gary is all lit up in the glow of his music stand light in the middle cradling his Epiphone Coronet, which bore the sticker SHALOM MEANS PEACE given to him by his friend and Yale Horror Film Society partner Bill Moseley.
