Author and critic Gary Lippman re: TOUCHED BY GRACE:
The late great Southern novelist Harry Crews often touted the virtue of "getting naked" in the art one makes—and "naked" is exactly what the musical wunderkind Gary Lucas gets in Touched By Grace, his memoir about his friendship and artistic partnership with the late great singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley. Talk about wearing one's proverbial heart on one's sleeve! Lucas is so vulnerable in his book—painfully, beautifully vulnerable—that he surpasses nearly every other first-person music testimony on the market. What's more, Touched By Grace serves as a detailed primer on how to decide on, commit to, remain committed to, and work your proverbial ass off in a lifetime career as a working artist. In prose as well as music, Lucas goes for broke—and wins. Big.

Read a rave review of of Gary's FLEISCHEREI duo with Caroline Scruggs live at the James River Film Festival in Richmond last Sun. 3/18/18:
GARY LUCAS PLAYS THE FLEISCHER BROS.! at the James River Film Festival Richmond, VA.
"On Sunday, March 18, a once in a lifetime performance was given at the legendary Byrd Theatre (b. 1928). Guitar star/virtuoso Gary Lucas treated the eager audience to numerous 1930s Fleischer Brothers cartoons, with fascinating histo ric facts, and the accompaniment of hometown fave vocalist Caroline Scruggs.
This reviewer has never witnessed in one sitting such an animated, musical tour de force. It was a dynamic show that moved without pause. Max and Dave Fleischer were of the school of cartoonery in which every object bounced and morphed like rubber and the art often traveled at rapid rate laterally across the screen in a an ebullient explosion of visuals, sound, and hilarity. Sheer cinematic surrealistic poetry!
Lucas both soloed and played the tunes with the talented and vivacious Scruggs lusciously crooning in her best Betty Boop-Kewpie Doll voice. Plus Lucas let several of the cartoons unfold without music or vocals allowing audience to revel simply in the pure genius of the Fleischers. Betty, Bimbo, Koko the Clown, Popeye, Olive Oyl, Bluto, Cab Calloway, and Louis Armstrong came alive right there with us in the theater for 90 magical minutes."

Argentinian fan Sol Valdez on TOUCHED BY GRACE:
"I will never forget the excitement I felt when I held in my hands 'Touched by Grace' for the first time. As a fan of Jeff Buckley, an artist surrounded by mystery, anytime you get the chance to know more about him it's a huge opportunity to try to get to know him and understand him a little bit more.
It occurred that a bond was created between us, I don't know how weird this may sound, but I felt this book was like a companion to me. I would never leave my house without it. I needed to read it ALL THE TIME.
Also, it made me felt like I was there while I was reading, Gary's descriptions and feelings make you feel you are part of it, i.e: The St Ann Tribute to Tim Buckley (I recommend to read it while listening to the concert).
Mr. Lucas did a great job blending both stories (his and Jeff's) and I can assure you that it will haunt you."

THE EDGE OF HEAVEN LIVE tonight Fri. Feb. 16th Chinese New Year @ The Laurie Beechman Theatre NYC is a Pick in the Village Voice!!
"Guitarist Gary Lucas gathers no moss. He has recently performed live scores to films by Rene Clair and Curtis Harrington, launched a funky Captain Beefheart covers project with singer Nona Hendryx, and played tributes to former collaborator Jeff Buckley. But nothing reflects this virtuosic maverick's charm and taste more than The Edge of Heaven, his 2010 revival of the lush midcentury Chinese film music Lucas fell in love with while living in Taiwan. This collection of astringently sentimental instrumentals and vocals focused on Zhou Xuan and Bai Guang, two of China's so-called Seven Great Singing Stars, with Lucas's flowing guitar providing ongoing reinterpretation of the music's nostalgic beauty. Here Lucas will revisit and expand his China adventure alongside Feifei Yang, a rising vocal star who also performs on the erhu (a two-string fiddle), and Jason Candler on reeds and percussion."

Rave review for Gary's performance with Rene Clair's 1924 "Entr'acte" at the opening ceremonies of Emir Kusturica's 11th Kustendorf Film Festival 1/16/18:
"The 11th Kustendorf Film & Music Festival held in the snowy mountains of western Serbia couldn't have gotten off to a better opening night start in January 2018 than with Gary Lucas on guitar captivating an enthusiastic audience of filmmakers from around the world along with locals who danced with joy and appreciation to Lucas' blend of everything from blues and jazz and beyond!"
—Andrew Horton, film critic for Cineaste magazine & The University of Oklahoma Professor of Film & Media Studies
Check out Gary performing his original live solo scores to a fragment of the 1918 lost Russian Futurist "Bound By Film" (starring Vladimir Mayakovsky and Lilya Yur'evna Brik) and to Rene Clair's 1924 surrealist classic "Entr'acte" filmed on the opening night of the 11th Kustendorf Film & Music Festival in Serbia

On Gary's World Premiere of his live solo scores for the Short Films of Curtis Harrington:
"Gary Lucas's live scores for a selection of Curtis Harrington's short films at Roulette perfectly captured the jagged rhythms and neurotic visual ambiance of these rare surrealist avant-garde gems. Lucas's frenzied guitar tropes alternating with lush pastoral passages underlined the apocalyptic climax of Harrington's ingenious ultra-rare 1942 adaptation of Poe's 'The Fall of the House of Usher', filmed when Harrington was still in high school."
—Richard Porton, Cineaste Magazine
Thanks to Susan Karabush for this brief clip from Gary's performance Fri. night at Roulette Brooklyn accompanying Harrington's 1946 "Fragment of Seeking"
