From Gary's Archive: Check out an ad Gary conceived and executed with art director Jay Rohrer for the release of The Clash's second album "Give 'Em Enough Rope" in the US circa 1978. The ad ran in Trouser Press Magazine, and Gary's copy line "The Only English Group That Matters" was shortened to "The Only Group The Matters" in subsequent ads Gary wrote for The Clash. The underlying text which the Clash album cover is layered over is a gossip column lifted from the Soho Weekly News.

The article linked below from Forrest J. Ackerman and James Warren's MONSTER WORLD circa 1966 got THE GOLEM ball rolling for Gary...a Jewish Frankenstein, how cool is that? When New Music America and the BAM Next Wave Festival offered him a commission in 1989 to develop new musical work in tandem with another art form, he instantly hit on the idea of live scoring the original 1920 silent German expressionist masterpiece, directed by and starring Paul Wegener—and he invited his childhood friend, keyboardist/composer Walter Horn, with who he had a long history of making radical music with, in on the project. Gary and Walter debuted their live score at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria (originally Kaufman Studios, where The Marx Brothers filmed "The Coconuts") in the Fall of 1989, and were a big hit there, with Laurie Anderson coming up to compliment them. Next John Zorn invited them to play with the film at his First Festival of Radical Jewish Culture in Munich the following year, and since then Gary has taken this film and their music all over the world—playing in over 20 countries and in fantastic venues, including 35MM Theater in Moscow and Dom Kino in St. Petersburg, at the Jecheon Festival of Film and Music in South Korea, opening the New York Jewish Film Festival at Lincoln Center, at Cineteca Nacional in Mexico City, at POP Montreal, the WUK in Wien, Berlin Jewish Film Festival, at the Amiens Festival in France, Teatro Verdi in Firenze, the First SP Terror Festival in Sao Paulo, the Valladolid Film Festival in Spain, at Royal Festival Hall in London, the Venice Biennale, the Next Festival in Tel Aviv, at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in Silver Spring MD, at the Sydney and Melbourne Jewish Film Festivals, Petofi Hall in Budapest, the Silent Movie Theatre in LA, at Paradiso Amsterdam—and of course, in Prague, home of THE GOLEM. Thanks to Jeff Roth for digging into his considerable archives for this Rocket from the Tombs.

"Gary Lucas' stunning score for 'The Golem' at Cornell was the highlight of our public programs this year. The music amplifies the power of this tale and the expressionist set to create an unforgettable evening of cinema—one that, far from being dated, almost seems prophetic."

Before the plague hit hard here in NYC, Gary's last out of town gig was a near sell-out with "The Golem" at the Cornell Cinema at Cornell University on March 4th—some very nice feedback below. If you are an arts or a film programmer thinking long-range and are looking for something unique, please contact Warren Galea at

"Weaving together themes that range from eerie to folksy, ominous to psychedelic, with a sprinkling of motifs from Jewish music mixed in, masterful guitarist Gary Lucas works his magic in a unique score for Paul Wegener's German expressionist classic, The Golem. Performing on an electric and acoustic guitar, along with effects pedals, he conjures unexpected sensations and surprising empathies. After the show, he offers a great talk-back about both his score and the film."
—Mary Fessenden, Director, Cornell Cinema
" I just saw the legendary Gary Lucas (of Captain Beefheart) perform his score to the silent film The Golem. Oscillating between electric guitar and acoustic and with the aid of a bunch of pedals, he captivates musically the story of the clay monster made by a Rabbi in Prague which will save humanity. Boy do we need a friendly monster these days! The performance feels intimate and at the same time produces vast soundscapes which sweep across the stage. I was blown away. This is something not to be missed."
—Trevor Pinch - author of Analog Days: The Invention and Impact of the Moog Synthesizer
"Gary Lucas' live score accompanying 'The Golem' is a total treat, a virtuoso performance on guitars that adds meaning and depth to this silent film classic. Don't miss this unique opportunity to see a great guitarist providing the soundtrack to a great movie!"
