· TOO MUCH: Just confirmed, on Sat. April 22nd I am returning for my fifth appearance performing in Richmond Virginia at the fantastic JAMES RIVER FILM FESTIVAL with my live score accompanying Orson Welles's 1938 silent surrealist farce "TOO MUCH JOHNSON". This will take place at Richmond's sumptuous art-deco palace The Byrd Theatre and I am so looking forward to performing there again. My last appearance playing with this film was sold-out at the Noorderzon Festival in Groningen Netherlands recently, and I am keen to play with the film again! I'm told by festival organizer Mike Jones that one of Orson Welles's favorite Mercury Theater players, Joseph Cotten, the star of this madcap film, is buried nearby—so a trip to his final resting place is de rigeur.

· Yesterday Gary posted a photo on Facebook of a an Italian fan who'd tattooed his arm with the lyrics of the first verse of "Grace". (Jeff's lyrics, and his song title as well). Now this photo just surfaced from Gary's fan Luigi Pastore—who tattooed his arm with the opening repeated guitar motif of Jeff and Gary's "Mojo Pin"! Which is Gary's music—he wrote the underlying original guitar instrumental with all the riffs that became "Mojo Pin" under the title "And You Will".

Glen spontaneously gave me his copy as a gift at the end of my afternoon hang / interview with him in June '73 on my very first trip to London. Glen was the loveliest guy—a true musical visionary.

· FOR MOTHER'S DAY: My mom ADELE LUCAS (nee Goldman) died of Covid at age 93 in a nursing home in Calfornia at the beginning of the pandemic on April 24th 2020. She could have lived to 100, she had such a strong life-force.
Once infected, she had a pronounced rapid decline. We were allowed only a FaceTime Messenger visit courtesy of a nurse inside the home, Caroline and I shouting into the phone "We Love You, Mom!!" My mother was too far gone, she was unable to acknowledge us. She couldn't move a muscle. It was pretty grim.
She raised us (my two older sisters and younger brother) liberal Democrats and instilled a love of art, literature, music, film, theater, nature, animals, and learning in us.
She was so beautiful, one of a kind.
Here she is pictured in better days on her honeymoon.

· Gary is putting finishes touches on his solo electric guitar arrangement of Richard Wagner's Overture to "Der Fliegende Hollander" (The Flying Dutchman), which he will premiere at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) on Friday May 6th accompanying Metropolitan Opera star dancer ALISON CLANCY, with choreography by Carolyn Choa.

Alison Clancy is an amazing artist and has the honor of performing the longest solo dance in MET history in their 2020 production of this opera. It's free and open to the public! Tickets here

· Just confirmed: Friday May 6th I will be accompanying Metropolitan Opera dancer Alison Clancy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with my solo guitar arrangement of the Overture to Richard Wagner's "Der fliegende Hollander (The Flying Dutchman)".
Alison, who is an accomplished musician and artist, is here shown rehearsing the piece with choreographer Carolyn Choa for her celebrated performance at the Met—the longest solo dance performance in the Met's history. I can't wait to be on stage with Alison, she is electrifying.
And I'm gonna turn on the juice just for her...

· My old friend Phillip Johnston who co-leads my Beefheart Tribute band Fast 'N' Bulbous has a cool new book out through Bloomsbury Academic titled SILENT FILMS / LOUD MUSIC, a thorough examination of contemporary live scoring for silent films (of which I am a pioneer—my first score was for the 1920 German expressionist film "The Golem" which I co-composed with Walter Horn and premiered in 1989 at the Museum of the Moving Image. I now have a dozen more live scores in my portfolio). This is a tremendous and well-needed book and there is a whole section devoted to "The Golem".

· THE WORLD OF CAPTAIN BEEFHEART featuring GARY LUCAS and NONA HENDRYX—with Fast 'N Bulbous and Gods and Monsters vets Jesse Krakow on bass, Richard Dworkin on drums, and Jordan Shapiro on keyboards—will perform for the first time in several years as part of Bang On a Can's Long Play Festival in Brooklyn the last weekend in April.

Seriously Gary was tickled to contribute to The Forward's 150 Greatest Jewish Pop Songs of All Time list thingy which just went online (thank you Seth Rogovoy). For the record (in case you want to look 'em up), they went with 3 of his recommendations: #24 Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band's "Dachau Blues", #54 Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers' "New England", and #100 Burning Spear's "Slavery Days". Also check #146 on the list where Gary's first album "Skeleton at the Feast" appears, with a shout-out for his live score for "The Golem", co-composed with Walter Horn. Abi Gezunt!

· RIP SUYLEN MILANES—Gary is heartbroken about the death of Suylen Milanes, one of the most amazing singers and collaborators he ever worked with, and a really lovely lady. Gary came to Havana in 2011 to record his song "Out From Under" with Suylen, her sister Haydee Milanes and Los Van Van. To hear these two angels and Los Van totally Cubanize his song it was one of the highlights of his entire career. Suylen is singing the first verse of the song in Spanish and harmonizes with her sister throughout. The track is featured on "The Essential Gary Lucas" 40 year retrospective double album
